New Walloon Registration Tax: What Are the Consequences for Buying a Used Car?

As of July 1st, 2025, the calculation method for the Walloon registration tax (TMC) has been revised. It now takes into account CO₂ emissions, the vehicle’s maximum authorised mass (MMA), engine power, and fuel type. As a result, the new formula clearly favors electrified vehicles.

The base formula for a new vehicle is as follows:
Registration Tax = Base Amount × (CO₂ / CO₂ Coefficient) × (MMA / Mass Coefficient) × Fuel Coefficient

The fuel coefficient is:

  • 1 for traditional combustion engines (petrol, diesel, LPG, etc.),
  • 0.8 for hybrid vehicles,
  • Between 0.01 and 0.26 for electric vehicles, depending on their power.

As you can see, this last factor can significantly reduce the final amount for electric cars.

What About Used Cars?
As before, used vehicles benefit from a depreciation system based on age: A 10% reduction per year for the first five years, then a 5% reduction per year thereafter.

The tax is capped at €9,000 and cannot be lower than €50 after applying any reductions (e.g. for large or single-parent families).
